Summary of Article
Giving children or adults drugs is not the solution for people with ADD or ADHD. Rather, there is a natural and permanent alternative to medication that works just as effectively as Ritalin without the negative side effects. Neurofeedback therapy (also called EEG biofeedback) is natural treatment for ADHD that is permanent, unlike Ritalin which does not treat ADHD’s causes. Neurofeedback works by training the brain to use the correct, higher frequency brain waves and therefore to regulate itself. It is like a brain work-out.
The practitioner places a sensor on the patient’s head to detect brain wave signals, then a computer transforms those signals into graphics that appear in a video game format, similar to that of Pacman. In order to teach the brain to be alert instead of distracted, the game beeps and graphics move on the screen when the player is alert. The more the player users the correct brain waves, the faster the video game becomes. In this way, the person trains their brain to change brainwaves in a painless, drug-free way. Improvement are generally seen in 10 sessions, and it takes 30 to 50 sessions for the symptoms to be completely corrected.
"The difference was amazing." Beverly Preston was also at her wit’s end with her son Michael, 11, who had been on Ritalin since he was seven. He has been free of the drug for nine weeks now, thanks to the Neurofeedback treatment with child psychologist Chantal Kayem Gazal, based in Sydney. " We noticed a difference in his behaviour almost immediately. He wasn’t argumentative, you didn’t have to ask him 100 times to do something, and he was more coordinated at soccer," she says.
Neurofeedback is also used successfully to treat the symptoms of anxiety, depression, insomnia or sleeping difficulties, Asperger’s and autism.
